Salvatore COCCOLUTO

The artist Salvatore Coccoluto has been developing his thoughts on “The matter of time” for many years. His works are halfway between painting and bas-relief, the canvas is the imprint left by the imaginary performance of the artist over matter. “From the smallest sizes, to the most impressive, his work brings you to consider the gest as the founding element of his artistic creation and invite you to understand – or at least distinguish – the successive stages of paintrification, from the layer of canvas to the impasto and the final volume. The movement in this last layer underlines and transforms the whole thing in a dance of matter, the result of which removes the work from any theory common to abstraction", says Jérémy Gadras, an art historian.
The artist comes from Gaeta, a small town north of Naples where the lands impose their power and their heterogeneity; he dives deep into personal memories to find the essence of his own reflection. Each piece appears as an imaginary journey through the thousand earth paths offered by the thousand landscapes still virgin of any civilization; “A moon like earth, minimalist, in which landscape are limited to the essential". A meditational link, nearly metaphysical, thus uniting man, time and matter.
“Tellurian canvases, stratigraphic painting or pictorial archaeology, Salvatore Coccoluto’s productions sublimate nature, bring back its strength, its dimension. An informal art in the cleansing and the disappearance of recognisable shapes, but referential as they are figurative in abstraction, always for the benefit of matter or the gest, in which each work is synchronous with an earth, a memory, a Time.” Jérémy Gadras concludes.
